Where it comes from

The story of Atalie

The story is in the second book of Kings and it is told with almost no commentary, which makes it colder. Athaliah is a queen mother who, when her son dies, destroys the royal line and takes the throne herself, and the text simply reports it. Racine took the story for his last play in 1691 and made it one of the great French tragedies, which is how the name reached French and then English use — Athalie is the French form and Atalie is its plainer spelling. There is a second and much likelier road for the American entries: Natalie without its first letter, which is a common enough respelling that both origins are live for any particular family.

Meaningscholars disagree

the Lord is exalted

Hebrew Athalyah joins a first element of disputed meaning to a shortened form of the divine name. The Lord is exalted is the usual reading; afflicted by the Lord has also been proposed. If the name is instead Natalie with the front letter dropped, the source is Latin natalis, of birth, and the meaning is entirely different.

Atalie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2019, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented biblical bearer with a story that is entirely her own.
  • Three short forms of different registers, two of which are names elsewhere.
  • Three light syllables that sit easily in front of most surnames.
What to consider
  • It will be heard and written as Natalie by a great many people.
  • The biblical figure it can be traced to is a mass murderer, which anyone who looks it up will find.
  • The stress falls differently in English, Spanish and French, so three sayings are in use.
