Where it comes from

The story of Asya

Russian builds affectionate forms that work as complete second names, and Anastasia gives Asya, Nastya and Stasya. Asya became a registered name in its own right, helped by a much-read nineteenth-century novella of that title. Turkish took Asya from the continent in the twentieth century and it has been among the most-used Turkish girls' names in recent decades. Both lines reach American records.

Meaningscholars disagree

resurrection, or Asia

Russian Asya is a household form of Anastasia, from Greek anastasis, resurrection. Turkish Asya is the continent's name, from a word of Akkadian or Greek origin whose own meaning is disputed. A third line makes it a form of the Arabic Asiya, the name of Pharaoh's wife in the Qur'an.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, readable at sight in a great many languages.
  • Anastasia stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
  • It belongs to Russian and Turkish traditions at once, which suits families with more than one heritage.
What to consider
  • In Russian it is a diminutive by construction, and older relatives may treat it as one.
  • Asia, Asya and Asiya are all close and get confused.
  • The soft s of Russian is not a sound English marks, so the name flattens in American mouths.
