Where it comes from

The story of Asia

Place and word names for girls became common in American naming from the 1970s, and Asia belongs among them — alongside India, Ireland, Chelsea and Dakota. It appears in the registers from the 1970s and rose sharply through the 1980s, peaking in the mid-1990s, with continuous use since.

Meaningscholars disagree

east, sunrise

The Greeks used Asia first for a region of Anatolia and then for the whole landmass. The commonest account derives it from an Akkadian or Phoenician word meaning 'east' or 'sunrise', paired with a word for 'sunset' that gave Europe. That symmetry is attractive but not securely established; a Greek nymph named Asia also appears in Hesiod.

Asia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 1,532 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Asia went to 84 girls in 2025, but Asiya, Aziyah and Asiyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 15 spellings went to 720, which makes it the 405th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,789 places above the chart.

and 7 rarer spellings.

About 1 girl in 2,232 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 19,134 for Asia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sunrise reading is vivid, and the Europe-and-Asia symmetry behind it is a good story.
  • It is a real name in Polish and Italian, by two unrelated routes.
  • Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk in English.
What to consider
  • The etymology is attractive but not securely established.
  • In Poland the same spelling is a familiar form of Joanna and is said quite differently.
  • It is closely dated to the 1990s in American records.
