Where it comes from

The story of Asra

The seventeenth chapter of the Qur'an is titled al-Isra after the night journey it opens with, and the root behind that word gives a small family of names. Asra is used chiefly in South Asia, where it appears in Pakistani and Indian Muslim families, and it reaches American records from there. Roman spellings vary between Asra, Israa and Isra according to which sense and which convention the family follows.

Meaningscholars disagree

night journey

The usual reading connects the name to isra, the night journey, from a root meaning to travel by night. A second account reads it as a plural of a word for a captive, which is unrelated and much less used as a naming sense. Neither is fully settled for the personal name.

Asra sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2024, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Asra went to 45 girls in 2025, but Azra and Azrah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 118, which makes it the 842nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,547 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,621 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Asra itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
  • A settled connection to one specific and much-recited chapter of scripture.
  • Read correctly at sight by English speakers.
What to consider
  • Isra and Asra are close and are treated as one name by some families and two by others.
  • The second reading of the root is unrelated and rather grim, which is worth knowing.
  • The sr cluster is unfamiliar in English and will be misspelled.
