The story of Ashlie
Ash is straight-grained, springy and shock-resistant, which made it the standard wood for spear shafts, tool handles and later for cart frames and aircraft parts, and Old English used one word for the tree and for the weapon. The tree carried mythological weight to match: in Norse cosmology the world tree Yggdrasil is an ash, and the first man, Ask, is made from one. English place names record where ash grew, and Ashley, the ash clearing, is among the commonest of them, which is why it became such a widespread surname and, in the twentieth century, one of the most popular American given names. Ashlie belongs to the late stage of that run, when the base name was so common that the spelling became the only place left to vary.
