Ashland

The ash was the useful tree. Its wood is springy and does not splinter, so it made spear shafts, and Old English used one word for both — aesc meant the tree and the weapon. The rune shaped like an F on its side is called aesc as well. And in the Norse creation story the first man is carved out of one.

The story of Ashland
Ash was the timber you wanted for anything that had to bend without breaking: spears, tool handles, cart shafts, later tennis racquets and hockey sticks. Old English called the tree aesc and called the spear aesc too, and named a rune after it. Norse mythology gave the tree the largest possible job — Yggdrasil, the tree the worlds hang from, is an ash, and the first man is called Askr because he was made from one. Ashland as a name is much plainer than any of that. It is an English field name that crossed to America, was attached to a great many towns, and came back as a name for children, mostly girls, at the end of the last century.
Meaning
ash land
An English place name of the plainest kind: aesc, the ash tree, with land. Both halves are Old English and both are still ordinary English words, so the name says exactly what it says. It became a surname, then an American place name in more than two dozen states, and then a given name.

The Lareina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ashland's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lareina climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lareina's path sketches the road Ashland is walking now.
Ashland sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both halves are ordinary English words, so the meaning needs no explaining.
- Ash works at once as a short form and serves either child.
- It serves either child, which the records confirm rather than merely allow.
- Ashley and Ashlyn are far commoner and it will be heard as one of them.
- It is a place name in more than twenty states, so it carries no single association.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper, which reverses how place names usually travel.
