The story of Arya
Arya is used throughout the Vedas as a term of honor, and Iran carries it in its name. European scholars borrowed the word in the nineteenth century for a language family and then for a racial theory, which is not what it meant. Arya remains an ordinary Indian given name for both sexes and is in current American use.
Meaning
noble, honorable
From the Sanskrit and Old Persian arya, 'noble' or 'honorable', used as a self-designation in the Vedas and the Avesta. Iran means 'land of the Aryans' from it. Nineteenth-century European philology repurposed the word for a racial theory; the Indo-Iranian meaning is unaffected.

About 1 boy in 18,979 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 31,631 for Arya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Derrill test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derrill climbed just as high around 1945, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derrill's path sketches the road Arya is walking now.
Arya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
