The story of Demian
Hermann Hesse's Demian, published in 1919, gave the spelling wide currency in German and then Spanish-speaking countries. Behind it sits the Greek verb for taming, whose negative gives diamond — the untameable stone. Cosmas and Damian were twin physicians who took no fees. It appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
to tame, to subdue
From the Greek Damianos, from damao, 'to tame' or 'subdue'. The related adamas, 'untameable', gives both 'adamant' and 'diamond'. The Demian spelling follows the German novel and Spanish usage. The Greek is documented.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Hansel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hansel climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hansel's path sketches the road Demian is walking now.
Demian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
