Where it comes from

The story of Arush

Vedic Sanskrit distinguishes colors far more finely than English does when the color has a ritual role, and the reds of fire and dawn are among the most-used: arusha describes Agni, the fire god, and the horses that pull the sun. Because dawn is the beginning of the sacrificial day, the word carries associations of starting rather than of color alone. Arush as a modern given name is used across northern India and Nepal and belongs to a large group of light and dawn names, alongside Aruna, Aditya and Kiran. It reached United States records with Indian migration and had its best year in 2010.

Meaning

reddish, the first light of dawn

Sanskrit arusha, red or ruddy, used in the Rigveda for fire and for the horses of the sun. The modern name Arush is taken from it and is usually glossed as the first ray of the sun. It is closely related to Aruna, the sun's charioteer, and both belong to the same color vocabulary.

Arush sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 50 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Arush went to 12 boys in 2025, but Aarush is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 111, which makes it the 817th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,986 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 15,388 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Arush itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Sanskrit meaning with a precise and vivid image behind it.
  • Five letters, two syllables, and easy for English speakers.
  • Aru is a warm and universally used everyday form in India.
What to consider
  • The back of the name spells an English word.
  • Arush, Aarush and Aarav are all nearby and get confused.
  • Outside Indian communities it will always need spelling.
