The story of Arno
The Arno rises in the Apennines and runs through Florence, where it flooded catastrophically in 1966 and damaged a substantial part of the city's art. Separately, German naming clipped Arnold, Arnulf and Arnwald to Arno, which became a name in its own right. It appears in American records around 1900 with German emigration and, more recently, from Italian and Dutch families.

eagle; or a river name
German Arno clips Arnold and other names built on Germanic arn, an eagle. The Tuscan river Arno is a separate and much older name of uncertain, probably pre-Roman, origin. The two are unrelated.

Where Arno is headed
Arno should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- Two real things stand behind it — an eagle word and a famous river.
- Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
- It reads as a shortening to German speakers, which may matter on a document.
- The river is the first association for anyone who knows Florence.
- Arnold is the fuller name and looks quite different.
