Where it comes from

The story of Arion

In Greek legend Arion was an immortal horse, the offspring of Poseidon and Demeter, swift enough to outrun anything; when the Seven marched against Thebes and were destroyed, Arion carried King Adrastus away, the only one of the leaders to escape. In 1827 Alexander Pushkin wrote a short poem called 'Arion', in which a singer is the lone survivor of a shipwreck that drowns all his companions, and readers have long taken it as his veiled reflection on the crushed Decembrist rising. Arion is given mostly to boys in the American record, with a real minority of girls.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Arion went to 70 boys in 2025, but Ariyon, Aarion and Aryon are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 110, which makes it the 818th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,273 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 15,528 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 24,401 for Arion itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
