Aarion
Masculine
Aarion is given to both — 541 boys and 146 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Aaron is one of the most-used names in the Hebrew Bible and nobody can read it. The likeliest explanation is that it is not Hebrew at all: Aaron, Moses and Phinehas are all Levite names with Egyptian rather than Semitic shapes, which is exactly what the story of a family raised in Egypt would predict.

The story of Aarion
Aaron is the brother of Moses and the first high priest, and his descendants are the priestly line of Israel, which kept the name in continuous Jewish use for three thousand years. English took it from the sixteenth-century Bible translations, and it became steadily more popular in the United States through the twentieth century. Aarion belongs to the respelling phase: the ending is reshaped toward -ion, which English readers know from Damion, Marion and Orion, and which turns a two-syllable name into a three-syllable one on the page without necessarily changing the sound. Its best year in United States records is 1998.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Hebrew Aharon has no accepted etymology. Proposals from Hebrew include mountain of strength and enlightened, both of which are attempts to force a Semitic root onto a word that resists one. The stronger scholarly view is that the name is Egyptian, like Moses and Phinehas, which would mean its sense was already lost by the time the biblical text was written. The -ion ending of this spelling is a modern American addition.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Day test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aarion's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Day climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Day's path sketches the road Aarion is walking now.
Aarion sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Contains one of the oldest continuously used names in the Western tradition.
- Ari is a strong, short and independently established everyday form.
- The ending places it beside Damion and Marion without repeating either.
- Aaron is the overwhelming standard and will be written for you constantly.
- Two pronunciations circulate and the spelling does not settle between them.
- The name's original meaning is genuinely lost and cannot be supplied.
