The story of Omer
Audomarus was a seventh-century bishop of Thérouanne, and the town of Saint-Omer grew around his abbey; the French name Omer descends from him. Separately, Umar ibn al-Khattab was the second caliph and one of the most consequential figures of early Islam. Nineteenth-century American use draws mainly on the biblical Omar and the French Omer, and it peaked around 1890.
Meaningscholars disagree
long-lived; prosperous
The Arabic Umar comes from a root meaning 'to live long' or 'to flourish', and it is one of the great names of Islam. Separately, the Frankish Audomarus — aud, 'wealth', and mari, 'famous' — gave the French Omer and the town Saint-Omer. The two are unrelated and both feed the English spelling.
