The story of Arietta
The metaphor is old and widespread: breath, air and song attach to one another in language after language. Latin spiritus is a breath and a spirit; Greek pneuma likewise; Hebrew ruach is wind, breath and spirit. Italian took aria from the air itself to the manner or bearing of a person — putting on airs is the same word — and then to a melody, and the operatic sense was established by the seventeenth century. English borrowed both the word and, separately, its own native equivalent. Arietta as a given name belongs to the nineteenth-century vogue for Italian musical vocabulary; the American figures peak in 1910.
Meaning
Italian "little air, short song"
From Italian aria, air or atmosphere, from Latin aer, with the diminutive -etta. In music an aria is a solo song in an opera or oratorio, and an arietta a shorter and lighter one. English used air in exactly the same sense from the sixteenth century — the airs of Dowland and Purcell are songs. The name is also read as a form of Henrietta or Marietta.
