The story of Aquiles
The Iliad is about Achilles' anger and its consequences, and if the grief-of-the-people reading is right then the poem is a very long explication of his name — which some scholars think is the point and others think is too neat. Spanish gives Aquiles, and it is used in Mexico, Colombia and Spain. The tendon is named for the heel his mother held him by.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No settled derivation. A reading joining akhos, grief, to laos, the people — grief of the army — has been proposed and fits the poem's action, but it is contested and the name may be pre-Greek, like several in the epic tradition.

The Ericson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aquiles's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ericson climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ericson's path sketches the road Aquiles is walking now.
Aquiles sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The central figure of the oldest surviving European poem stands behind it.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Seven letters and three syllables, manageable to write.
- The meaning is genuinely unknown despite the name's fame.
- The heel and the tendon are the first associations for many.
- Achilles is the English form and looks and sounds quite different.
