The story of Antonina
The Antonii were an old plebeian family, and one of them nearly took the Roman world; the name survived the empire through several saints, above all a hermit of Egypt whose cult made Anthony ordinary across Europe. Feminines followed: Antonia, Antonina, Antonietta. Antonina was widely given in Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Italy, and it came to American records with families from all of them around the turn of the twentieth century.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Roman family name Antonius has no accepted etymology and is probably Etruscan. The connection to Greek anthos, a flower, is a Renaissance invention and is the reason the h appears in Anthony; it has no basis. Priceless, also often printed, is a later guess.
