Where it comes from

The story of Annella

Latin made diminutives with -ellus and -ella, and the ending survived into Italian more vigorously than almost any other piece of Latin grammar. It is still productive there: a fratello is a little brother, a sorella a little sister, and every name can take it — Antonella, Gabriella, Marcella, Fiorella, Donatella. English borrowed the ending too, but mostly attached it to objects instead of people, which is why it sits inside umbrella and novella without anyone noticing. Annella is Anna with the Italian ending, recorded in American registers from the early twentieth century and used mostly by families who brought it with them.

Meaning

little Anna

Anna is Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor. The -ella ending is the Latin diminutive, alive in Italian and used across Europe for centuries; it means small or dear and adds nothing else. Annella is therefore a plain, transparent formation with both parts documented.

Annella sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1931, with 15 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Annella went to 7 girls in 2025, but Anela and Anella are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 81, which makes it the 879th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,053 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,843 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Annella itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both parts are documented and the formation is completely transparent.
  • Three short forms, all of which are full names in their own right.
  • Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
What to consider
  • Annabella, Annalie and Anella are all close and will be substituted.
  • It is strongly represented among the oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
  • Most people will shorten it to Anna or Ella, both of which are far commoner.
