Hannah is the mother of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible, and her name became Anna in Greek and Latin and then Anne, Ann, Annie and Anna across every European language. Northern Europe built diminutives on it: Anneli in Finland and Sweden, Anniken in Norway, Anneke in the Netherlands, Anouk in France. The Finnish Anneli was a top-ten name there for much of the twentieth century. In America the -li ending arrives from a different direction — it is the shortest of the three spellings of the -lee sound, alongside -lee and -leigh — and the American Annali sits at the point where a genuine Nordic name and a modern American respelling produce the same six letters.
