Where it comes from

The story of Angelika

The plant's reputation was medical and specific. European herbals from the sixteenth century onward describe angelica as a defense against plague and poison, and the story that its virtues were revealed by an archangel in a dream is repeated in several of them. It was grown widely in northern Europe, and its stems are still candied for confectionery and its roots used in gin, chartreuse and vermouth. The personal name spread separately, through Italian romance — Ariosto's Orlando Furioso of 1516 has an Angelica — and through the general stock of Catholic names. The Central European spelling Angelika peaks in America in 1996.

Meaning

Greek "angelic" — of a messenger

From Latin angelicus, from Greek angelikos, of or belonging to a messenger, from angelos. Angelika is the German, Polish, Hungarian and Russian spelling; the k is the regular letter for the sound in those languages. The herb Angelica archangelica takes its botanical name from the same word and the legend attached to it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Angelika went to 14 girls in 2025, but Angelica is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 412, which makes it the 581st most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,910 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,901 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Angelika itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
