Where it comes from

The story of Angelie

Angela and Angelo became ordinary in Italy in the Middle Ages, and every Catholic country built its own set: Angelique in France, Angeles in Spain, Aniela in Poland. English took Angela in the nineteenth century and the family expanded again in the twentieth. Angelie is a spelling that sits between the French Angelie and the English Angeline, and it appears in American and Filipino records in particular, where Spanish and English naming habits overlap.

Meaning

messenger; angel

Greek angelos, a messenger, which the Greek Bible used to translate the Hebrew malakh, also a messenger. The English word angel and the whole family of names come from it, and the original sense is simply someone who carries a message.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is one word and one of the best known in the language.
  • Angie and Angel are ready short forms of quite different registers.
  • It works in French, Spanish, Filipino and English households alike.
What to consider
  • Angelie, Angeli, Angely and Angelique are all in use, so the spelling will be asked for.
  • Two pronunciations circulate, one French and one English.
  • Angel and Angie are both very well used, so the everyday forms will not be distinctive.
