The story of Angelia
Angelus and Angela were used in Italy from the Middle Ages, and Angela of Foligno and Angela Merici both made the feminine a saint's name. English-speaking countries took Angela up strongly in the twentieth century, and American families elaborated it: Angelia, Angelina, Angeline, Angelica. Angelia appears in the registers from the 1950s and peaked in the early 1970s.
Meaning
messenger
From the Greek angelos, 'messenger'. Greek translators of the Hebrew scriptures used it for the beings sent by God, and Latin took it as angelus, from which every European language gets its word for an angel. So the name means the errand, not the creature.

The Carmela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Angelia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carmela climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carmela's path sketches the road Angelia is walking now.
