French has a matched pair of diminutive endings, -et for men and -ette for women. English borrowed only the feminine one and then used it for two things at once: small objects, as in kitchenette and novelette, and women's names, as in Annette, Jeanette and Paulette. Half a gender pair, doing double duty.

Where it comes from

The story of Anette

The suffix arrived in English with Norman French and never brought its masculine partner. French has Jeannot and Jeannette, Paulet and Paulette, and English took Jeanette and Paulette and left the others. That left -ette available for other work, and English put it to two uses. One is diminutive and slightly commercial: kitchenette, luncheonette, dinette, novelette, all of which suggest something small and often something cheap. The other is straightforwardly female: usherette, majorette, suffragette. The second use is now largely obsolete and was resented while it lasted, since a suffix that marks the female version of a job implies the male version is the default. In names, the ending remains entirely unproblematic and simply reads as French and mid-century.

Meaning

Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace

Anne is from Hebrew Hannah, from a root meaning favor or grace, through Greek and Latin. Annette is the French diminutive, formed with -ette, the feminine of the diminutive suffix -et. Anette with a single n is the Scandinavian and German spelling and is standard there; in English it reads as a variant of the French. It peaks in the American data in 1965.

About 1 girl in 9,983 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Anette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
