Anelise
Feminine · “German compound of Anna and Liese”
Anneliese is a compound of two names that were already short forms. Anna is the Greek form of Hannah; Liese is a German clip of Elisabeth. So the compound is not two names joined but two nicknames joined, and the full forms it descends from, Hannah and Elisheba, are nowhere visible in it. Anelise is the American simplification, with one n and one s.

The story of Anelise
German compound names are built by rule and the rule uses short forms. Annemarie, Anneliese, Marlies, Karlheinz, Hansjoerg: each joins two names in reduced shape, and the reduction is what makes them pronounceable as a single word. The pattern was at its most productive in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and reached the United States with German-speaking immigration. English speakers meeting the name had trouble with the doubled consonants, which in German mark a preceding short vowel and are not silent decoration, and with the final -e, which German pronounces as a distinct syllable and English does not. Both were casualties. Anelise keeps the shape and loses the orthographic information, which is the usual fate of a borrowed name: the sound survives, the spelling rules do not.
Meaning
German compound of Anna and Liese
Anna is from Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace. Liese is a German short form of Elisabeth, from Hebrew Elisheba, usually read as my God is an oath or God is abundance. The compound is German and dates from the early modern period, when double names of this kind became fashionable in German-speaking Europe. The spelling Anelise, with a single n and no final vowel, is an American reduction and is not standard in German.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Raynee test
