The story of Andriana
Adria is a town in the Po delta that is now several miles inland, because the river silted up around it over two thousand years. Before that it was a port, and it was important enough that the sea took its name: the Adriatic is named after a town it no longer touches. The emperor Hadrian's family came from the same place and carried the name, which is how Hadrianus became Adriano and Adriana across southern Europe. Andriana is a separate line entirely, Greek rather than Latin, and it belongs to the Andreas family. The two names are one letter apart and have been merging in American records for a century.

of Andrew
With the n, the name is Greek Andriana, built on Andreas, from the word for a man. Without it, Adriana is from Latin Hadrianus, a man from Hadria. The two are unrelated and the spellings are constantly interchanged, so a particular Andriana may have been intended as either.

The Wenda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Andriana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wenda climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wenda's path sketches the road Andriana is walking now.

The trade-off
- A documented Greek origin traceable to an ordinary word.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names in their own right.
- Four open syllables with a clear rhythm and no cluster anywhere.
- Adriana is much commoner and the n will be dropped by almost everyone who writes it.
- Four syllables is a long name in front of a long surname.
- The two names it sits between mean completely different things, and the spelling is the only signal.
