The story of Wenda
The Sorbs have been in Lusatia since the sixth century and have spent most of that time being governed by somebody else. Their languages have survived through periods of active suppression — schooling in Sorbian was banned outright at points — and are now protected, taught and spoken by tens of thousands of people, which is not many but is more than several better-known minority languages can manage. They have their own flag, their own Easter traditions involving elaborately decorated eggs, and villages with bilingual signs.

Wend was the German word for the Slavs of the eastern marches, and Wenda would be a woman of that people. As an American name it is more likely to be a form of Wendy or a shortening of Gwendolen, both of which were fashionable when it appears. The record does not choose, and German-American families in the Midwest could plausibly have meant either.
