Where it comes from

The story of Andrez

Castilian distinguishes s from the th sound written c and z; Latin American Spanish does not, having merged them into a single s. That merger, called seseo, covers the entire Spanish-speaking Americas and much of Andalusia, and it means that for the great majority of Spanish speakers the letters are simply two ways of writing one sound. The consequences show up in naming: Andres and Andrez, Yaritza and Yaritsa, Marisol and Marizol all appear in the records. Andrez's best year in United States records is 2008, and the spelling is strongest in Mexican and Central American families.

Meaning

manly, of a man

From Greek andreios, manly or courageous, from aner, genitive andros, a man. Andres is the Spanish form of the apostle's name Andreas. The final z of this spelling reflects seseo, the merger of the s and z sounds across Latin America and much of southern Spain, which makes the two letters interchangeable in writing.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Andrez went to 12 boys in 2025, but Andres is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,756, which makes it the 207th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,596 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 973 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Andrez itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
