Andrae
Masculine · “Greek "manly”
Andrae is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,122 boys against 41 girls since 1880.
Andrae is Andrew with a French-looking ending, and the -ae is doing the same work as the -ay in Janay: it marks a stressed final syllable, which English names almost never have. The device came into American naming from French -é and then detached from French entirely.

The story of Andrae
French André puts the stress on the second syllable and marks it with an accent. American records strip accents, so André becomes Andre, and then families who want the stress preserved without the accent write Andrae or Andray. The device is the same one behind Renae, Janae and Shanae. Andrae's 1982 American peak follows the visibility of the gospel musician Andraé Crouch, whose recordings from the 1970s onward carried the spelling widely.
Meaning
Greek "manly, of a man"
From Greek andreios, manly, from aner, a man — the same root as android and misanthrope. Andreas was the name of the first-called apostle. The etymology is settled. The -ae ending contributes nothing beyond the stress pattern and is not a French or Greek form.

Pronouncing Andrae
AHN-dray
Two syllables. French puts the stress firmly on the second; American speakers frequently move it to the first, which is the difference between ahn-DRAY and AHN-dray. Both are heard and the spelling settles neither.

The Arvil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Andrae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arvil climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arvil's path sketches the road Andrae is walking now.
Andrae sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
