The story of Anand
Ananda appears throughout Sanskrit literature and became one of the most productive elements in Indian naming: it forms the second half of Vivekananda, Yogananda, Ramananda, Sivananda and a great many monastic names, where it marks the bliss attained through whatever the first element names. As a standalone given name Anand is common in Hindi-, Tamil-, Telugu- and Gujarati-speaking families. American records show it from the 1960s and rising through the 1970s, peaking in 1980 as the first large cohort of post-1965 Indian immigrants had children here.
Meaning
bliss, joy
Sanskrit ananda is built on the prefix a- and the root nand, 'to rejoice'. It is not ordinary happiness but the unconditioned joy that Vedanta identifies as intrinsic to being: the formula sat-chit-ananda, 'being, consciousness, bliss', describes the nature of Brahman. Ananda was also the name of the Buddha's cousin and personal attendant, who recited the discourses at the first Buddhist council. The word carries all of this at once.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anand's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lionell climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lionell's path sketches the road Anand is walking now.
Anand sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
