Amonte
Masculine · “lawman”
Underneath Amonte, Damonte and Lamonte there is a Scottish surname that means lawman. Lamont comes from Old Norse logmadr, the man who knew and spoke the law in a Norse-Gaelic community, and the American rhyme family built on it has no idea it is carrying a job title from the twelfth century.

The story of Amonte
Clan Lamont held Cowal in Argyll, in a region where Norse and Gaelic mixed for centuries, and its name records a real position: the logmadr recited the law from memory in societies that had not written it down. The surname reached America, became the given name Lamont in the twentieth century, and then entered the prefix system, which treated the -mont and -monte ending as a slot and filled it: Lamonte, Damonte, Demonte, Amonte. The stress falls on the final syllable, which is unusual in English and is one of the reasons the ending proved productive. Amonte's best year in United States records is 2001.

lawman, by way of the surname Lamont
The Scottish Lamont descends from Old Norse logmadr, a lawman or law-speaker, a genuine office in the Norse-Gaelic west of Scotland. Whether every American Amonte descends from that surname is another question: the -monte ending is also read as the Spanish and Italian word for mountain, and the A- prefix is a free American naming element. The family has more than one plausible parent.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amonte's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lord climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lord's path sketches the road Amonte is walking now.

The trade-off
- Contains Monte, a complete and established American name.
- The final syllable is sounded, which gives it a rhythm most English names lack.
- Short enough to say easily and long enough not to be mistaken for a nickname.
- Amonte, Amontae and Amonta all circulate.
- The final e is silent to many English readers, who will say uh-MONT.
- The Lamont behind it is a guess about descent rather than a certainty.
