Where it comes from

The story of Ammon

Amun's cult at Thebes made him the most powerful god in Egypt for a long stretch of its history, and Greeks and Romans identified him with Zeus and Jupiter — which is how his name reached Europe at all. The Ammonites of the Hebrew Bible are a separate people and a frequent adversary in those texts. In American use the name belongs overwhelmingly to Latter-day Saint families, for whom Ammon is a missionary in the Book of Mormon, and its record in the United States tracks that community closely, which is why it is far more common in Utah and Idaho than elsewhere.

Meaningscholars disagree

the hidden one — on the Egyptian road

Egyptian Amun or Amon is generally read as 'the hidden one', and he became the chief god of Thebes and then of Egypt. The Hebrew Ammon is separate: it names the people descended from Lot in Genesis, and its own derivation is read from am, 'people'. The Book of Mormon Ammon is a third and unrelated use. Which one a family means is a family fact, and the readings do not overlap.

Ammon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 133 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ammon went to 45 boys in 2025, but Amon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 85, which makes it the 843rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,955 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 20,095 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 37,957 for Ammon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters, two syllables, and no ambiguity in the sound.
  • Genuinely old — the Egyptian form is among the oldest recorded names anywhere.
  • Distinctive without being hard to say or spell.
What to consider
  • In the United States it is strongly identified with Latter-day Saint families, which is either the point or something to weigh.
  • The obvious short form is Ammo, which most families would rather the child avoided.
  • Ammon, Amon and Amun are all in use and refer to rather different things.
