Where it comes from

The story of Amon

Amon of Judah is Manasseh's son and Josiah's father, and the books of Kings give him two years and a bad report before his servants kill him. The Egyptian Amun is another matter altogether: the god of Thebes who became the chief deity of the New Kingdom, whose priesthood was enormously powerful and whose name the Greeks attached to Zeus. English took Amon from the Hebrew scriptures and Ammon from the Egyptian and biblical Ammonites, and the spellings have been confused ever since.

Meaningscholars disagree

skilled workman — in Hebrew; the hidden one — in Egyptian

Hebrew Amon is generally read from a root about being firm or trustworthy — the same root behind amen — and one reading gives 'skilled workman' or 'master craftsman', which the book of Proverbs uses. Egyptian Amun or Amon is read as 'the hidden one' and belonged to the chief god of Thebes. The two are entirely separate and the English spelling does not distinguish them.

Pronouncing Amon

AY-mun

Two syllables, stress on the first. Hebrew says ah-MOHN with the stress at the end; the Egyptian god is usually AH-mun or AH-moon in English. All three are heard depending on which name is meant.

Amon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2017, with 61 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Amon went to 40 boys in 2025, but Ammon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 85, which makes it the 843rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,193 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 20,095 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,702 for Amon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables, and said correctly by everyone at first sight.
  • Two genuinely ancient ancestries, one Hebrew and one Egyptian.
  • Short and clean, which pairs well with a long surname.
What to consider
  • The biblical king of this name gets a very short and unflattering notice.
  • Amon and Ammon are separate names and are constantly confused.
  • Its meaning depends entirely on which of two unrelated traditions the family means.
