The story of Hutson
Medieval English shortened names hard and then built new names out of the shortenings — Robert gave Hob and Dob, Richard gave Hick and Dick, Hugh gave Hudde. When surnames fixed in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, these pet forms were caught in them, which is why so many English surnames are built on names nobody has used as a first name for six hundred years. Hutson is one of those. It reached America as a surname and has moved to the front of the name recently, alongside the far more visible Hudson.
Meaning
son of Hudde, a pet form of Hugh
Hudde was a common Middle English affectionate form, generally taken as a version of Hugh and occasionally of Richard, whose short forms multiplied in that period. Adding -son gave Hudson and Hutson, which are the same surname with the d hardened to a t in one branch. Hugh itself is Germanic hug, 'mind, spirit, thought'. The reading is documented.

The Satchel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hutson's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Satchel climbed just as high around 1998, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Satchel's path sketches the road Hutson is walking now.
Hutson sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented English surname with a traceable medieval construction behind it.
- Two syllables, phonetic spelling, and nothing silent to explain.
- Distinct from Hudson while sounding entirely familiar, which is a hard balance.
- Hudson is far more common and this name will be written with a d constantly.
- The obvious trimming is Hut, which is an ordinary English word.
- Surname-names get read as surnames on forms and land in the wrong field.
