The story of Satchel
Leroy Paige earned his nickname as a boy in Mobile, Alabama, carrying travelers' bags at the train station, reportedly with a pole rigged to hold several satchels at once. As Satchel Paige he pitched for decades in the Negro Leagues and finally in the major leagues when he was well past forty, and he left sayings as famous as his fastball, among them don't look back, something might be gaining on you. The word itself goes back through French to Latin saccellus, a little sack.
