Where it comes from

The story of Amor

Amor as a god is a Roman literary figure more than a cult one: he appears throughout Latin poetry, and the story of Cupid and Psyche is told at length in a second-century Latin novel. As a given name Amor belongs mostly to Spanish and Portuguese use, where words of this kind — Amor, Consuelo, Dolores, Esperanza — have long been given as names, usually to daughters and sometimes through Marian titles. Its appearance for boys in American records is recent, and it belongs alongside the small group of borrowed love-words being used as names now.

Meaning

love

Latin amor, from amare, 'to love'. The same word gives Spanish and Portuguese amor, Italian amore and French amour, and through French it gave English amorous and paramour. Amor was also a name of the Roman god of love, whose Greek counterpart is Eros. The reading is exact and undisputed.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning needs no explaining in any European language.
  • Four letters, no silent ones, and readable at sight in English and Spanish alike.
  • A documented Latin word and a documented Roman figure rather than a modern coinage.
What to consider
  • It is the word for love applied to a person, which is a large thing to say on their behalf.
  • In Spanish-speaking countries it has usually gone to daughters, so a boy may need to explain it.
  • English speakers reach for AY-mor on first sight until corrected.
