The story of Amier
Amir has been an Arabic title and name since the earliest Islamic period, and it spread with Arabic into Persian, Urdu, Turkish and Hebrew, where the same root also exists. It entered American naming from two directions at once: with Muslim and Middle Eastern families, and through Black American naming from the nineteen-seventies. Once it was widely used, the respellings began, and Amier, Ameer, Ameir and Amir all write one sound.
Meaning
prince; commander
Arabic amir, one who commands, from amara, to order or command. English admiral comes from the same word through a mangled Arabic phrase meaning commander of the sea, which Latin speakers heard as a single word.

The Markeese test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amier's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Markeese climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Markeese's path sketches the road Amier is walking now.
Amier sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
