Ambria

Our story of Ambria
Latin had a productive suffix for making a land out of a name: add -ia and the stem becomes a territory. Rome did it constantly, and the habit outlived the empire, so nineteenth-century scholars and mapmakers went on doing it, and modern states were still being named that way in the twentieth century. American naming picked the suffix up for people. Add -ia to almost any stem and the result sounds simultaneously classical and feminine, which is why the girls' list carries Ambria, Kenia, Amaria, Zaria and Nevaeh's whole neighborhood. The suffix does the work; the stem can be a color, a place, a syllable or nothing at all. It is one of the few Latin grammatical endings still actively producing new English words, and almost all of them are now names.

Ambria is an American formation, most plausibly Amber with the -ia ending attached, and possibly influenced by Cambria and Umbria. Amber itself is from Arabic anbar, which named ambergris before it named the fossil resin. No inherited etymology attaches to Ambria; the peak is 2000.

The Sadako test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ambria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sadako climbed just as high around 1919, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sadako's path sketches the road Ambria is walking now.
Ambria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
