Where it comes from

Our story of Alonna

Ours, offered as ours. Irish-American English absorbed a handful of Irish endearments as words — alanna, acushla, mavourneen — all of them vocative phrases lifted out of context. Alanna is a leanbh, my child, said to a child. That the women's name Alana arrived at the same sound from a completely different direction is a coincidence, and a fortunate one, because the endearment is the warmer of the two things to be called.

Not established

Alana is generally read as the women's form of Alan, whose Breton and Irish origin is itself unsettled — a word for a rock and one for handsome have both been proposed. The Irish endearment alanna, from a leanbh, my child, is a separate word that reached the same sound.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Alonna went to 37 girls in 2025, but Alona and Alonnah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 95, which makes it the 865th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,038 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 16,919 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 43,440 for Alonna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lonna and Ali are both usable short forms in their own right.
  • The Irish endearment behind one reading is genuinely warm.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Alanna, Alana and Alonna are all in use and the middle vowel varies.
  • Alan's own meaning is genuinely unsettled.
  • The stress is unsettled between two readings.
