Where it comes from

The story of Nubia

The Nubian kingdoms of Kerma, Napata and Meroe were serious powers: one Nubian dynasty ruled Egypt itself for most of a century, and the pyramid fields at Meroe hold more than two hundred pyramids, steeper and smaller than the Egyptian ones. The name survives in Arabic and in European languages, and it is given as a woman's name across Colombia, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, where it has been steady since the mid twentieth century.

Two accounts. The Egyptian word nbw, gold, is often given, since Nubia was the source of Egypt's gold and the region's Egyptian name refers to it. The alternative derives the name from the Noba, a people recorded in the region in late antiquity. Neither has settled the matter.

Nubia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 83 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real civilization with an archaeological record most people have never heard about.
  • Three open syllables make it easy in Spanish, Portuguese and English alike.
  • It is genuinely uncommon in the United States while being ordinary in parts of Latin America.
What to consider
  • Its origin is disputed, so a child looking it up will find two answers.
  • Naming a child for a region invites questions about connection that a child did not choose.
  • Nubia and Nadia are close enough in American speech to be confused.
