Almira begins with al-, and that is enough for most name lists to give it an Arabic meaning. The al- is not an Arabic article here; the name behaves in the records as a variant of Elmira, and the princess reading does not survive checking.

How old is the name Almira?

Almira was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Almira alive today was born around 1925, making them about 100 years old. About 700 people named Almira are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Almira most popular?

Almira peaked in 1883, reaching #499 nationally. Today it ranks #10107, 9,608 places below that high. See the whole 1883 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Almira

The al- trap catches a whole family of names. English readers know that Arabic marks the definite article with al-, as in algebra, alcohol and Alhambra, so any name beginning that way invites the reading. But English also has Germanic names with an adel or athal element meaning noble, and Spanish names beginning with Al- from other sources entirely, and simple respellings of El- names where the vowel was never fixed. Almira sits in that last group: the American records show Elmira, Almira and Elvira used interchangeably in the same families and regions, which is what variation on one name looks like, not what three separate borrowings look like. Handel's first opera, staged in Hamburg in 1705, was called Almira, and it is a fair guess that the literary form circulated. Guessing is what it stays.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Almira is widely glossed as Arabic al-amira, the princess. There is no documented route from that word into English or American naming, and the American name behaves in the records as a variant of Elmira and Elvira. Those are themselves unsettled: Elvira is Spanish and probably Gothic, Elmira likely a shortening of it. Any confident Arabic reading is a folk etymology.

Almira sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mira and Allie are two very different short forms.
  • It is a real nineteenth-century American name rather than a modern revival.
  • Three syllables with a strong central stress.
What to consider
  • The circulated Arabic meaning is not supportable, so the name has no reliable gloss.
  • Two pronunciations of the middle syllable are in use.
  • Elmira and Elvira will be confused with it.
