Where it comes from

The story of Allee

Words do not only change meaning, they change social rank, and the direction is often downward. The French allee is a designed walk, usually straight, usually planted on both sides, and in the great gardens of the seventeenth century it was an instrument of display: the eye was meant to run down it for half a mile. English borrowed the word in the fourteenth century, applied it to garden walks, then to narrow passages between buildings, and finally to the service lane where the bins are kept. The same descent happened to villain, which meant a farm worker, and to knave, which meant a boy. Meanwhile the French word kept its dignity at home, which is why an English alley and a French allee are the same word at opposite ends of the social scale.

French allee, a walk or avenue

Allee is a French word meaning a walk, path or tree-lined avenue, from aller, to go. As an American name it is more often a respelling of Allie, a short form of Alice, Alison or Allison. The two are indistinguishable in the records; the peak is 1907.

Practical strengths

  • Al and Lee both work as short forms.
What to consider
  • Allie and Ally are both more common spellings.
