Feminine · “Greek alexein and aner”

The story of Alesandra
The Alaksandu treaty, made between the Hittite king Muwatalli II and the ruler of a western Anatolian city called Wilusa, is one of the more startling documents in name history: it appears to record a Greek-looking name in Anatolia several centuries before the Iliad was composed, and Wilusa is widely identified with Ilios, which is Troy. The Iliad gives Paris the alternative name Alexandros. None of that proves a connection, and Hittite scholars are careful about it, but it does mean the name may be attested a thousand years before Alexander of Macedon. In Italian the double s of Alessandra is a real long consonant, held audibly; English has no such contrast, so American spellers drop one s without losing anything they can hear. The single-s form is the sound written honestly.

Alessandra is the Italian feminine of Alessandro, from Greek Alexandros, built from alexein, to defend or ward off, and the stem of aner, a man. Alesandra drops one s from the Italian spelling. The peak of this spelling is 2002.

Alesandra's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jensine climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jensine's path sketches the road Alesandra is walking now.
