Alice and Adelaide are the same name, and the proof is in what French did to the middle of it. Adalheidis lost its interior syllables one at a time — Adalheidis, Adelais, Aliz, Alice — a process called syncope, and it is the main engine by which long Germanic names became short French ones.

Where it comes from

The story of Aleisha

Syncope, the loss of a syllable inside a word, is what makes French names short. Latin calidus became chaud; Germanic Chlodovech became Louis; Adalheidis became Aliz. English names went through their own version — Robert to Rob, but also Sanct Andreas to Saunders — yet French did it hardest and earliest, which is why Norman French supplied English with a stock of short names in the twelfth century that had already been through the process. Alice arrived in England that way, was one of the most common women's names of the Middle Ages, faded, and returned in the nineteenth century. Aleisha, an American respelling of Alicia, peaks in 1980.

Meaning

Germanic "noble sort, of noble kind"

From Old High German adal, noble, plus heid, sort, kind or quality — a person of noble kind. Old French reduced Adalheidis to Adelais and then Aliz, which English took as Alice. Alicia is the Latinized form, and Alisha, Aleisha and Alesha are modern respellings of Alicia. Adelaide is the same name arriving by a different, less-reduced route through German.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aleisha went to 14 girls in 2025, but Aleysha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 911th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,580 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,801 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Aleisha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
