Where it comes from

Our story of Aleysha

Ours, offered as ours. Two very different names meet at this sound. Adelheid was a Frankish compound meaning noble kind, which Norman French wore down through Adelice to Alice and Alicia. Aisha is Arabic for one who lives, and belonged to the Prophet's youngest wife, who transmitted a substantial body of hadith and led an army. American naming reached Aleysha without needing to choose, and both ancestors are worth naming.

Not established

Alicia descends from Adelheid, Germanic adal, noble. Arabic Aisha means living or alive and belonged to the Prophet's wife. The modern spelling can be read as either and neither is documented for it.

#911
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aleysha went to 35 girls in 2025, but Aleisha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 911th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,156 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 32,801 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Aleysha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two real and very old traditions stand behind the sound.
  • Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • The middle vowel is unsettled between LEE and LAY.
  • Aleysha, Aleisha, Alisha and Alicia are all in use and none but Alicia is common.
  • The two possible sources mean entirely different things.
