Akiko
Feminine · “Japanese aki and ko”
Japanese parents choose the characters of a name as carefully as the sound, and some consult a system that counts brush strokes. Seimei handan assigns fortune to the number of strokes in each part of a written name, and families have chosen between equally pretty characters on that basis for over a century.

The story of Akiko
Stroke-count divination is a genuine and widely used practice in Japan and it shapes naming decisions. The system, seimei handan, counts the strokes in the surname and the given name, sums them in several combinations, and reads each total as auspicious or not according to published tables. Bookshops sell reference volumes for it, naming consultants use it, and families who are not otherwise superstitious will still check. Because a Japanese name's sound can be written with many different characters, and the characters have different stroke counts, a parent who has settled on a sound still has a real choice to make, and the divination gives a way to make it. This is one reason Japanese naming feels different from western naming: the written form is a separate decision from the spoken one, and both are deliberate.
Meaning
Japanese aki and ko, bright or autumn, and child
Written with a character read aki, most often bright, clear or autumn, and the character ko, a child, which ends a very large proportion of women's names given in Japan between about 1900 and 1980. Which aki is used decides the meaning, and several are current. It peaks in the American data in 1927, among Japanese American families before the immigration restrictions of the following decade took effect.

The Antoinetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Akiko's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Antoinetta climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Antoinetta's path sketches the road Akiko is walking now.
Akiko sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
