Our story of Ajla
Ours, offered as ours. Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian use one of the most consistent alphabets in Europe: every letter has exactly one sound and every sound exactly one letter, a reform pushed through in the nineteenth century by Vuk Karadžić on the principle write as you speak. So Ajla is unambiguous to any Bosnian reader and impossible for an English one, who sees a j and produces the wrong consonant entirely.

moonlight; or oak grove
Generally connected to Turkish Ayla, a halo of moonlight, which entered Bosnian with Ottoman naming. A separate derivation from a Slavic word has been offered. Neither is firmly established for the Bosnian form.

The Coryn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ajla's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Coryn climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Coryn's path sketches the road Ajla is walking now.
Ajla sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- The Bosnian spelling is completely regular and unambiguous at home.
- Well used in Bosnia, so it has a real community behind it.
- English readers will say the j as an English j, which is wrong.
- Ajla and Ayla are the same name and both will be written for her.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled.
