Aixa
Feminine · “Arabic Aisha”
The x in Don Quixote used to be a sh. Medieval Spanish wrote the sh sound with x, so Quixote was said kee-SHOH-teh and Ximenez was Shimenez. In the sixteenth century that sound shifted to the throaty jota and the spelling was changed to j, which is why Spain now writes Quijote. Aixa keeps the old spelling.

The story of Aixa
Spanish underwent a large consonant reorganisation in the sixteenth century, and the sound written x was one of its casualties. Old Spanish had a sh, written x, and a zh, written j or g, and both merged into a single new sound made at the back of the throat, the modern jota. The spelling followed, so dixo became dijo and Xerez became Jerez, which English borrowed before the change and still calls sherry. Names sometimes kept the old letter, especially in Andalusia and in words inherited from Arabic, which is why Aixa, Ximena and Mexico still carry an x that no longer means what it did. Mexico is the clearest case: it is pronounced with the jota and spelled with the x by national preference, and English speakers reading it as ks are applying a rule that was never right for it.
Meaning
Arabic Aisha, living or alive
From Arabic aisha, living or one who lives, from the root a-y-sh, life. Aisha was the youngest wife of the Prophet Muhammad and one of the most important transmitters of hadith. Aixa is the Spanish form inherited from Andalusi Arabic, using the medieval Spanish x for the sh sound. It survives in Spain and reached the American record with Spanish-speaking families, peaking in 2007.

The Davette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aixa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Davette climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Davette's path sketches the road Aixa is walking now.
