Agustine
Masculine · “venerable”
Augustus was not a name. It was a title the Roman senate voted to Octavian in 27 BC, meaning something like the consecrated one, and it stuck so hard that every emperor after him used it and a month was renamed to match. The name came out of the title, not the other way round.

The story of Agustine
The senate needed something to call a man who had won a civil war and was pretending not to be a monarch, and Augustus was chosen for its religious flavor: an augustus place was one consecrated by augury. It became the standard imperial title, which is why the month Sextilis was renamed August and why the word survives in English meaning imposing. The diminutive belonged to a fourth-century North African bishop who wrote a book about his own life and mind that had no real precedent — the Confessions is often called the first autobiography in the western tradition, and it is addressed to God rather than to a reader.
Meaning
venerable, consecrated
Latin Augustinus, a diminutive of Augustus, from a root meaning to increase or to consecrate — the same one behind augment and augur. Agustin is the Spanish form and Agustine an American spelling of it; the u after the A is dropped in Spanish.

The Danuel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Agustine's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Danuel climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Danuel's path sketches the road Agustine is walking now.
Agustine sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning and a documented fourth-century bearer whose books survive.
- Recognizable in Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names in their own right.
- Augustine and Agustin are both commoner, so the spelling will be given every time.
- The stress falls in three different places depending on the language.
- Three syllables and an unfamiliar shape means more repeating than most names need.
