Antron
Masculine
The h in Anthony is a mistake. The Roman name was Antonius, with no h anywhere, and Renaissance scholars inserted one because they assumed a Greek origin in anthos, a flower. There is no such connection. The wrong letter has been in the name for five hundred years.

The story of Antron
The Antonii were an old and prominent Roman family — the best-known of them lost a naval battle to Octavian in 31 BC — and like a good many Roman clan names theirs has no explanation. Etruscan is the usual suspect, because Rome absorbed a great deal of Etruscan vocabulary it could not later parse. The h arrived much later, put in by scholars correcting what they took to be a lazy spelling, and it has stayed in English and nowhere else: Italian says Antonio, Spanish Antonio, French Antoine, Portuguese Antonio, all without it. Antron belongs to the American practice of taking a familiar front and adding a ringing ending.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Antonius was a Roman clan name and its meaning has never been established; it may be Etruscan. The flower reading is a Renaissance guess written into the spelling. Antron adds an American -ron ending to the shortened form and has no meaning of its own.

The Orman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Antron's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orman climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orman's path sketches the road Antron is walking now.
Antron sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables and a spelling that most people read correctly on sight.
- Ant works as a short form and connects it to a very large name family.
- The consonants make it hard to mishear across a room.
- There is no documented meaning behind the compound.
- It is also a registered name for a synthetic fiber, which a search will turn up.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled between the two syllables.
