Adrianne

Adrianne descends from a town on the Adriatic, and the sea is named after the town rather than the other way round. Hadria was a settlement in northern Italy; the emperor Hadrian's family came from there; and his name became one of the most productive in Europe. Adrianne is the French feminine spelling, and its American peak is 1983.

The story of Adrianne
Hadrian ruled from 117 to 138 and left more physical traces than most emperors — the wall in Britain, the villa at Tivoli, the rebuilt Pantheon. Several popes took the name, and Adrian IV, elected in 1154, remains the only English pope. The name spread through every European language: Adriano in Italian, Adrien in French, Adriaan in Dutch. The feminine Adrienne is French and entered English use in the twentieth century; Adrianne is the English respelling of it, and it peaked in America in the early 1980s along with Adrienne itself.
Meaning
from Hadria
Latin Hadrianus means a man from Hadria, a town in what is now the Marche or the Veneto — sources differ on which of two places named Hadria is meant. The Adriatic Sea takes its name from the same town. The emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus, who built the wall across northern Britain, made the name famous. The derivation is settled; the only open question is which Hadria, and that has no effect on the meaning.

The Ruthann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adrianne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ruthann climbed just as high around 1943, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ruthann's path sketches the road Adrianne is walking now.
Adrianne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
