The story of Abdoul
Western record-keeping split Arabic compound names at the space and treated the first half as a given name, which is how Abdul came to stand alone in passports, registers and telephone books across the world. Arabic speakers know it is incomplete; most non-Arabic speakers do not. The Abdoul spelling with ou is French, since French writes the oo sound that way, and it is standard across Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Niger, where French is the administrative language. That is where most American bearers of this spelling come from, and its best year in United States records is 2003.
Meaning
servant of the
Arabic abd, a servant or slave, plus al-, the definite article. The construction requires a following divine name; abd al-rahman is servant of the Merciful, abd al-aziz servant of the Mighty. Abdul alone is a truncation that occurred when Western records began separating the elements. The Abdoul spelling is the French transliteration used across West Africa.

ab-DOOL
Two syllables with the stress at the end. The ou is a French spelling of the oo sound; English speakers who read it as an English ou produce ab-DOWL, which is wrong in every language involved.

The Hansen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abdoul's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hansen climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hansen's path sketches the road Abdoul is walking now.
Abdoul sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Arabic construction with an unusually clear grammar behind it.
- Abdou is a warm and very widely used West African short form.
- Marks a West African francophone heritage clearly.
- The name is grammatically incomplete without a following divine name.
- Abdul is the more common English transliteration and will be substituted.
- English readers will mishandle the French ou.
